What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?
Vestibular Physiotherapy
Often called vestibular rehabilitation therapy, or VRT, is a specialised type of physiotherapy that treats problems with your balance system, particularly the inner ear (vestibular system) and how it communicates with your brain. It is a targeted, evidence-based approach.

What does treatment involve?
A neurological physiotherapist, with specialist training in vestibular disorders, will assess your symptoms and design exercises tailored to you.
During your first appointment, your physiotherapist will perform a detailed assessment. This may include:
- Eye movement testing
- Balance and gait assessment
- Head and body positioning tests (e.g. the Dix-Hallpike test for BPPV)
- A review of your symptoms, history, and lifestyle
Different techniques will be utilised during treatment, depending on your symptoms and the root cause.
- Canalith repositioning techniques (such as the Epley manoeuvre for BPPV)
- Balance retraining exercises
- Gaze stabilisation exercises to improve visual focus during head movements
- Habituation exercises to reduce sensitivity to motion
- Education about posture, movement, and managing symptoms
The goal is to reduce dizziness, improve stability, and help you feel confident moving through life again.
