National Smile Month 2018

Posted on 6th June 2018

The National Smile Month is organised by the Oral Health Foundation with the aim of helping to improve the oral health of millions of people throughout the United Kingdom.

But we’re using this as an opportunity to raise awareness about people who have Facial Palsy, which means that they can’t smile the way they used to.

Facial Palsy can have many causes, but the most common one is Bell’s Palsy; in Bell’s Palsy the facial paralysis comes on suddenly or over a period of a few hours, and the person finds that on the affected side they are unable to close the eye or move the mouth, for instance to smile.

Physiotherapy can help gain improvements in people with facial palsy, whatever the cause, even if the rehabilitation is started months or years after the onset.

Here at Neurological Physiotherapy we have the skills and specialist equipment to help with facial palsy, so if you know anyone who suffers from this distressing condition, get them to contact us.
