Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS is a neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, inflammation within the nerves can result in a variety of symptoms which can vary greatly from person to person and also day to day.

Some of the symptoms include, muscle weakness, sensory symptoms such as pins and needles or numbness, changes within muscle tone, fatigue, balance and mobility problems.

Medical management for MS

There have been huge advances in drug therapy and is very much dependent on the type and nature of the disease, for some there are a number of disease modifying drugs aimed at slowing the disease progression. Drugs may also be effective in managing some of the symptoms such as pain, spasticity and fatigue.

Physiotherapy for MS

Research indicates that physiotherapy is beneficial at all stages of the disease and can reduce disability, maximise potential for independence and reduce secondary complications.

Studies are showing that exercise can play a key role in managing MS and in particular resistance training, Pilates, yoga and aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming.
