Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS is an inflammatory, degenerative, neurological disease which often involves a series of relapses leading to problems with:

  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Pain
  • Spasticity
  • Fatigue

Here at Neurological Physiotherapy our staff are well trained and highly skilled in assessing and treating these difficulties. We can provide a unique contribution to the management of your MS-by improving and maintaining your functional capabilities and supporting you to manage your long term symptoms.

Research indicates that physiotherapy is beneficial at all stages of the disease and can reduce disability, maximise potential for independence and reduce secondary complications.

Following thorough assessment individual goals will be set and a treatment plan will be established.

Treatment will usually involves a hands-on approach aimed at improving postural alignment to relieve symptoms and enable muscles to function the best they can so that you may move more easily and with better balance.

Exercise will almost always be prescribed and, there is a strong body of evidence supporting the use of exercise in improving activity levels and the health and well-being of people with MS.Personalized exercise programmes can be provided or when appropriate we can guide you towards attending local classes.

Where appropriate we can provide guidance to family members and carers in supporting you with your exercises or with moving and handling.

We will provide advice for managing your symptoms in the long term; we cannot prescribe medication but may provide recommendations to discuss with your GP.

A multidisciplinary approach may be required in managing your MS and we can refer onto and liaise with other health professionals such as the community rehabilitation team, occupational therapy team, orthotics department, FES service, wheelchair services or counsellors etc.

Recommendations regarding external resources and support groups can also be provided

Top tips for MS

Management of symptoms and prevention of possible complication is a priority, and an aspect of our treatment that is of high importance to us. We know that effective management of symptoms and prevention of complications can help to maintain physical function and independence.  We recognise the importance of the holistic management of this condition and its impact on the individual. This can best be achieved by working with other health professionals and support groups. We will refer to other services where appropriate, such as orthotics, FES assessment , wheelchair  and community rehabilitation services; and recommend clients use support groups such as their local MS society which offer physical and social support activities.  We also recognise the importance of medication in the management of MS symptoms and disease modification. Though we cannot prescribe medication, we can offer advice and recommendations where appropriate
